Hi Joe. Interesting to read that floating slab foundations in Texas are designed for the shifting soils. Floating slabs in Canada are very rare in residential construction but are more common in garages, sheds and other outbuildings. They are designed to withstand the heaving action of freeze/thaw cycles more so than unstable soils. We do have expansive soil types in certain locations but it isn't widespread. These soil types can wreak havoc even with basements because of the pressure they can exert on the walls.

All the best to you.
